Tapered, Fluted Femoral Fixation
نویسنده
چکیده
CLINICAL/SURGICAL PEARLS: 1. Determining the highest level of supportive femoral bone is important to place the taper into this bone. An extended trochanteric osteotomy is useful for removal of the old stem and facilitates placement of a relatively straight, tapered, fluted stem down a bowed femur, thus preventing anterior perforation of the stem through the anterior cortex. The intact diaphysis often will benefit from a cable around the highest level of intact bone to prevent fracture and provide a better end point during stem insertion. The proximal, nonsupportive metaphyseal bone should be reconstructed around the upper stem for support.

Tapered modular fluted titanium stems for femoral fixation in revision total knee arthroplasty
Consensus regarding femoral stem fixation options in revision total knee arthroplasty remains controversial. Tapered, modular, fluted titanium (TMFT) stems have an excellent track record in total hip arthroplasty for their ability to provide axial and rotational stability in situations of compromised host bone. We present 3 successfully treated cases in which the Food & Drug Administration gran...
متن کاملRevision total hip arthroplasty in patients with extensive proximal femoral bone loss using a fluted tapered modular femoral component.
Revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) is challenging when there is severe loss of bone in the proximal femur. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of revision THA in patients with severe proximal femoral bone loss treated with a fluted, tapered, modular femoral component. Between January 1998 and December 2004, 92 revision THAs were performed in 92 pa...
متن کاملTapered fluted modular titanium stems in the management of Vancouver B2 and B3 peri-prosthetic fractures.
Tapered, fluted, modular, titanium stems are increasingly popular in the operative management of Vancouver B2 and selected B3 peri-prosthetic femoral fractures. We have reviewed the results at our institution looking at stem survival and clinical outcomes and compared this with reported outcomes in the literature. Stem survival at a mean of 54 months was 96% in our series and 97% for combined p...
متن کاملManaging femoral bone loss in revision total hip replacement: fluted tapered modular stems.
If a surgeon is faced with altered lesser trochanter anatomy when revising the femoral component in revision total hip replacement, a peri-prosthetic fracture, or Paprosky type IIIb or type IV femoral bone loss, a modular tapered stem offers the advantages of accurately controlling femoral version and length. The splines of the taper allow rotational control, and improve the fit in femoral cana...

AIMS The goals of this study were to define the risk factors, characteristics, and chronology of fractures in 5417 revision total hip arthroplasties (THAs). PATIENTS AND METHODS From our hospital's prospectively collected database we identified all patients who had undergone a revision THA between 1969 and 2011 which involved the femoral stem. The patients' medical records and radiographs wer...
